In the January 2002 issue of Nature Medicine, Shipp <i>et al. describe how DNA chips can help the prognosis of cancers. By analyzing 58 patients with large-cell diffuse B lymphoma by this technique, the authors were able to classify patients into two categories: 5-year survival rate of 70% and 5-year survival rate of 12%. This approach would have a better prognostic effectiveness than the International prognostic index.

Large-cell diffuse B lymphomas account for 30 to 40% of non-Hodgkin lymphomas in adults and are curable by chemotherapy in 40-50% of patients.

As Shipp recalls &lt; i > et al. In their article, the International Prognostic Index (IPI) has been developed in particular to identify the patients who will benefit most from standard treatments. The object of Shipp &lt; i > et al. were to use genetic criteria to assess the survival of patients.

They studied the expression profile of 6,817 genes in lymphoma cells from 58 patients. All patients had benefited from a standard CHOP treatment and 5-year survival data were available for all patients.

The method used by the authors was to highlight a series of rapporteur genes whose expression was closely related to survival.
